Disneygay

From Weezerpedia
(Redirected from Disney gay)

"Disneygay" is a pejorative coined by Rivers Cuomo (under the username "ace") on March 4, 2002 in a forum post on the Rivers Correspondence Board. Though the use of "gay" as an insult has broadly fallen into disuse in the years since, the term "disneygay" remains an in-joke among fans.

History

On March 4, 2002, RCB user "asschun" posted a thread titled "you need to read this!", which compared the band's recent output unfavorably to the song "Only in Dreams" in particular. Cuomo replied to the thread multiple times to deride the song, calling it "boring", "gay", and "disneygay", among other things, and comparing it unfavorably to recent songs from Maladroit and the Album 5 sessions in progress at the time. He also remarked how his brother was embarrassed by the song. Cuomo also claimed that he stole the bassline from another song and that he only put it on the album because he needed another song ("Only in Dreams" supposedly being the only song left). Cuomo was, most likely, attempting to provoke his fans or, at the very least, later changed his mind about the song. In a 2006 interview with the Harvard Crimson, Cuomo was amused when reminded of the forum post:

The Harvard Crimson: Along those lines, I have to point out—the Rivers who is talking to me right now doesn’t sound like the Rivers who, posting on the Weezer message board circa 2002, said that "Only in Dreams" was "GAY! GAY! GAY! DISNEYGAY!”

Rivers: [Laughs] That’s so great that you remember that! It’s amazing that that information’s still out there!

Also, in a 2006 fan interview, Cuomo listed the song, alongside Haunt You Every Day, when asked what solos of which he was most proud:

Matt Grant, Enon, Ohio: What guitar solo are you most proud of/do you like the most, and why?

Rivers: Sheesh, so many. Maladroit, Pinkerton, much of Blue and MB. Id have to go with OID and HYED for sheer length. Epic, epic, epic. So few people play these kinds of solos anymore.

but if anyone does that test and thinks the new stuff is better than OID, then they're idiots.

Re: what the fuck

Of coarse your going to think its better. Seeing that you have listened to OID 100 billion times and Take Control, what maybe 15? The argument that OID is better stems from your emotional connection to a song you feel is a classic.

Apples and Oranges comparrison. The new batch of songs aren't supposed to tap into the same emotional vein. Does sound to you like hes trying to? Take the new music for what it is: Solid rocking music.

Note: this is not an argument that the new is better than old or visa/versa. Its all good in its own right.

only in dreams vs. take control

i actually think that listening to take control over 15 times makes it a worse song. I'll listen to OID a billion times and still love it.

It works in the context of the song. Same thing with the lyrics. Nothing weezer has done is very original...you're famous because you write consistently good pop songs. I can see where you think it's rather messy though....do you think you could record OID the same way you did in 93, today?

Argue what you will, ace, about Only In Dreams.. but it doesn't change the fact that a lot of people truly love that song, people that care about music.. that song just MOVES a lot of people, and you can't deny that. Whether or not it conforms to some abstract formula or anything.. it doesn't change the fact of what it means to some people. Do you understand this? I'd kill to have people feel that way about one of my songs.

I seriously doubt ANYONE feels the same way about anything you've put out recently.

Cheesy lyrics are ok here since the song doesnt follow the structure that the recent songs all have, Intro,Verse, verse, chorus, solo, half chorus, outro.

we put up with that shit because it's immediately followed by

that way there's no chance i will
crush your pretty toenails into a thousand pieces,

OID's lyrics work because of the music behind them. But they are kinda middle-school cheesy. I think D&D's lyrics work for the same reason. I can't say OID is a bad song, but I will say that the build up is a little too long and unnecessary.

as for oid's cheesiness. . . given your position on "fakeness"i am not sure how it's possible to write an authentically sentimental song short of the type of "over-emotion," super-realistic stuff on Pinkerton.

OID's cheesiness works because of the specificity of the lyrics....the series of cliches with that "but when we wake it's all been erased" twist. I like D&D, but i think it's less powerful because it lacks that lyrical specificity (and a 4 minute instrumental that alienates/bores the average listeners).

I noticed a definite attempt to make the vocals better towards the end of the recording process. A few of the songs have some feeling, but I would agree the first two albums are better lyrically and vocally.

I think Only In Dreams is good but it isn't one of my favorites on the blue album. Jonas, No One Else, Say It Ain't So... I don't believe you actually think that was a bad album.

I also hate December with a passion. I will agree that Slob kills OID... I don't know why but I love that song and I always have.
