The Weezer Recording Chronology (WRC) is an attempt by Weezerpedia to create a successor to the Recording History, a detailed list of every demo, bootleg, and studio recording by the band Weezer and any directly associated bands, written by Karl Koch from the years of 2000 to 2011. Pages are separated by years.
This page details the years 1998 and 1999. It contains demos and other projects recorded during Weezer's first hiatus.

"American Girls", January 30–early February 1998
This version of "American Girls" was recorded across multiple sessions in January and likely early February 1998 at Sunset Sound Factory, with Matt Sharp producing. It includes instrumentation from Yuval Gabay and Sebastian Steinburg of Soul Coughing, guitar by Greg Brown of Cake, and additional vocals from Rivers Cuomo's childhood friends Justin Fisher and Adam Orth as well as Geffen A&R representative Todd Sullivan. It is, to date, the final recording to feature the Weezer lineup of Rivers Cuomo, Brian Bell (backing vocals), Pat Wilson (drums), and Sharp.
In a alt.music.weezer post, Pat Finn noted a session took place on January 30, 1998 with Cuomo and Sharp, and that Pat Wilson joined for a session on January 31, likely to record his drum part.[1]
It would appear on Meet the Deedles: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack in March 1998, and is the only officially released recording by Homie to date.

Seven More Minutes recording wraps up, winter-summer 1998
After the Fort Apache mixing, Sharp returned to California to finish the album. While recording for the album would end that summer, Maverick Records were constantly asking Sharp to change things that he was refusing to change, as well as the constant re-mixing and modifying of songs by Sharp, both delaying the album several times before its release on April 13, 1999.

Weezer demos, late February 1998
By this time, after several trips to London, UK and back to work on the upcoming second Rentals album throughout 1996 and 1997, Sharp had fully left Weezer. Tryouts for new bass players would commence throughout the next few months, including former 60 Wrong Sausages bass player Pat Finn. When it came time to record new demos at Fox Force Five in Hollywood, however, the band was left without a bass player.

Rivers's Sketch Tape, May 1998
Weezer demos with Mikey, May-November 1998
After tryouts for several bass players, Mikey Welsh (formerly of Lovely) was chosen to be Weezer's new bass player late spring, moving into a townhouse with Wilson and Cuomo in Hollywood. Rehearsals started at Cole Rehearsals then moved to TK Productions & Rehearsal Studios in the summer. These are also closely tied to the later TK(X) Cuomo demos; a few of them are likely actually Weezer demos.

Rivers's Sketch Tape, June 1998
TK(X) demos, June-December 1998
These were a set of demos recorded at TK Productions & Rehearsal Studios in Los Angeles. Some of these recordings are suspected to be with Weezer, while others are clearly solo Cuomo demos. There were two groups of these recordings: TK and TKX. The distinction between the two is unclear.

"Velouria" session, August 1998
In late August 1998, the band went into Rich Mouser's Mouse House Studio to record a cover of the Pixies "Velouria" for the tribute album Where Is My Mind?. They also recorded several original songs, but apparently these weren't considered good enough for release at the time due to the songs being unfinished. Mixes from the sessions are listed below:

Brian song demos, Late Summer 1998
During rehearsals in 1998, Wilson and Bell were given opportunities to bring songs in for consideration. When it was suggested to record the songs Bell brought in as a demo, Cuomo decided he didn't want to use them for Weezer. The other three then decided to record the songs as a demo on their own.

Weezer demos, September 1998
These demos date around the time Wilson left rehearsals and went home to Portland after being unsatisfied with the way rehearsals were going. Welsh brought in Todd Phillips who had previous played alongside Juliana Hatfield and Welsh. He stayed with the band until rehearsals ended in early 1999.

The Garage concert, November 1998
Weezer performed under the name Goat Punishment at The Garage during November of 1998. Goat Punishment was used as a pseudonym to perform secret shows, for this show the band performed Nirvana covers. The reason why this happened is unclear but it may be connected to the work Cuomo was doing on Nirvana in the The Encyclopedia o' Pop around the same time. The show was recorded by the band onto cassette and MP3's from this tape were later released on weezer.net in November 2000 and April 2001
