Overview

According to the song's MP3.com page, the music for the song was composed in 1997 while the lyrics were finished and the song itself recorded in late 1998. The lyrics mention singer Frank Sinatra, who died in early 1998. An earlier version of the lyrics present on the MP3.com page mentions the contemporary baseball player Sammy Sosa instead. The song also references Mighty Joe Young, a 1949 movie that served as a spiritual successor to King Kong. The film had been remade the year the song was recorded.

Lyrics

Put first things first: we don't have that long
So go make your mark and I'll make my song
and sing it in time
I'll sing it in time

You blink an eye something or someone's died
Just yesterday Frank Sinatra died
I read it in time
I read it in time

So get your business done while you have the chance
Get up and dance, get up and dance
'Cause this tune is short, a year is short
A life is not that long

Don't be afraid, party like King Kong
Go make your mess and I'll make my song
Mighty Joe Young
Mighty Joe Young

So get your business done while you have the chance
Get up and dance while you still can dance
'Cause this tune is short, a year is short
A life is not that long

I had a girl who dumped me cold, said it was just our time
She turned her pages at the sound of the chime
The only words i want to say to her are four letters long
and not the four letters in "time"

So I write a song for bass and drums and two untuned guitars
but it's not enough to comfort me out here among the stars
So I write a song for bass and drums and two untuned guitars
but it's not enough to win her back out here among the stars
I hear a tick-tick-tock from the cuckoo clock
Will we make it home in time?
I hear a tick-tick-tock from the cuckoo clock
We'll never make it home in time.
