Avant Garde was the first serious band Cuomo was in. The band existed from 1985 to 1990 and consisted of [[Kevin Ridel]] on vocals, Cuomo and [[Eric Ridel]] (later replaced by [[Mike Stanton]]) on guitars, [[Justin Fisher]] on bass, and [[Bryn Mutch]] on drums. The tape was professionally duped and featured the songs and info printed directly onto the clear cassette, as well as a black and white J-card that had portrait photos of the whole band.
