In 1990, a man claiming to be an NBC executive told Matt Sharp about a television movie project called Ice Butterfly: The Nancy Kerrigan Story. The executive commissioned Sharp to make the theme for movie. Sharp, who had never written a song before, formed The Clique with two friends he had met through the Black Rock Coalition. Sharp borrowed money from his mother and recorded the song "Ice Butterfly" at Paramount Studios in Hollywood in July of 1990. After the movie project fell through, Sharp produced a maxi-single of the song in an attempt to get it played by local radio stations, to little avail. The band was thereafter dissolved. | In 1990, a man claiming to be an NBC executive told Matt Sharp about a television movie project called Ice Butterfly: The Nancy Kerrigan Story.
