Overview

The song's lyrics revolve around the American writer and poet Gertrude Stein and her famous sentence "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose." from the poem Sacret Emily. At the age of 29 Stein moved from the United States to Paris, France where she spent the rest of her life. In the chorus Sharp sings about going to Paris. The French director and actor François Truffaut is also mentioned in the song.

A Japanese Version of the song was released as a bonus track as part of the deluxe edition release.

Coincidentally, the 70s New-Wave band also called The Rentals released a single titled "Gertrude Stein" in 1979.

Lyrics

Gertrude Stein, standing in the sunshine
Surrounded by the children of Truffaut
Fixing her hair, she sits in a director's chair
Cue the sound, let the cameras roll

Put me on a plane to Paris
It's time for me to go
where a woman is a woman
A woman is a woman
A rose is a rose

Gertrude says: "Why are we so out of focus?"
Out of focus, sliding off the road
Now come on people, think about your motivation
Pull it together, try to gain control

Put me on a plane to Paris
It's time for me to go
where a woman is a woman
A woman is a woman
A rose is a rose

Gertrude Stein wants to be a friend of mine
She calls me up on the telephone
She says: "My boy, I want a piece of celluloid
A little film to call my very own"

Put me on a plane to Paris
It's time for me to go
where a woman is a woman
A woman is a woman
A rose is a rose
Put me on a plane to Paris
It's time for me to go
where a woman is a woman
A woman is a woman
A rose is a rose
