Fury was the first band of Rivers Cuomo, Justin Fisher and Leaves Cuomo.

Overview

Fury was started in June 1984, after Rivers Cuomo received his first guitar for his fourteenth birthday. The inspiration for Fury came from witnessing an eighth grade graduation party performance of Quiet Riot's "Metal Health." The performance blew young Rivers away, and he was particularly inspired by the fact kids his age got together and sounded like that.[1][2] Both Justin Fisher and Rivers also took note of the screaming crowds and girls. Fury's first rehearsal was on June 23, 1984 -- four days after Rivers received his guitar.[3] Fury was a band comprised solely of Kiss covers, with Rivers singing Paul Stanley's vocal parts and playing Ace Frehley's lead guitar parts, while Leaves played Stanley's rhythm guitar parts.[4] Eric Robertson played drums and Justin Fisher played bass guitar.

Three months of rehearsal were focused on learning three songs from Kiss' live album Alive!, "Cold Gin," "Rock and Roll All Nite," and "Strutter."[5] These were done by ear gradually, as they couldn't find a Kiss songbook for guitar.[2] Rivers played a Stratocaster copy through a Yamaha amp,[2] Leaves had "something cheesy", said Fisher, and Justin used his father's Gibson SG bass and cabinet. Eric, a more experienced musician, had a Pearl drum set.[citation needed] The band played their first show in Southbridge, Massachusetts at an unknown state fair battle of the bands event in September of 1984.[6] The band performed the three songs they had learned in Kiss-like outfits, with black eyeliner, streaks under their eyes and parachute pants.[7][5][5]

In a 2021 interview with Guitar World, Rivers talked about his hopes for Fury. "With my 14-year-old logic, I thought I could make it as a musician playing somebody else's songs. I just thought we were going to be Kiss, but called Fury, and that we'd make it somehow." Despite this, the band would break up at some point in 1986 or 1987 for unknown reasons. Rivers and Justin would later form Avant Garde in 1987, during their senior year of high school.[8]

According to Justin, tapes still exist from those days,[citation needed] and a snippet of a summer 1984 Fury rehearsal can be heard on the Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo track, "I Wish You Had an Axe Guitar". A tape of Fury's first show exists in the Weezer archives, as well as a videotaped show from November 1985.[6]
