Overview

"If I Had My Way" is a reworking of the 1994 Suburban Advantage demo "Let's Go to the Mall". Karl Koch recalled the changes between the tracks:

i think the verses were shortened a bit, or some of them,. it gets to the choruses "sooner" in my memory. overall less wordy, more rock. and the "carnival" part i think is changed to something else. or maybe its a guitar solo

The song was recorded in April 2005 at the Steakhouse Studio in Los Angeles, California, then mixed and mastered by Joe Barresi alongside the other tentative album tracks. In January 2006, Wilson formally cancelled the album's release, abandoning the mostly complete songs that were recorded the previous year. "If I Had My Way" was not recorded for the next Special Goodness album, Natural, and remains unreleased.
