Get ready to dress like Buddy Holly and have your sweater destroyed: Weezer is coming back to San Diego tonight, this time headlining show at Soma.
The band's frontman, Rivers Cuomo, probably never guessed this day would come five years ago. He was an 18-year-old Connecticut farm boy who, bored with the country life, decided to move to Los Angeles to become a rock star.
But fate bent his way. His girlfriend broke up with him shortly after the move, and in his sorrow. he began to write songs.
Next thing he knew, former Cars frontman Ric Ocasek was producing Weezer's debut album.
"'No One Else' is the jealous obsessive a hole in me freaking out on my girlfriend, and 'The World Has Turned' is the same a-- hole wondering why she's gone," Cuomo said.
And for anyone trying to figure out "The Sweater Song," he has an explanation that about sums it up.
"Undone' is the feeling you get when the train stops and the little guy comes knockin' on your door. It was supposed to be a sad song, but everyone thinks it's hilarious."
Guitarist/singer Brian Bell is another band member who dreamed of rock stardom at an early age.
He and Cuomo met in Los Angeles and, along with Patrick Wilson and Matt Sharp, formed Weezer.
Driven by Cuomo's songwriting, the band began playing countless gigs on the Los Angeles club scene, evolving the act into what it has become today.
"It's mayhem," Bell said last week during an interview from the band's New York hotel room where he was waiting to begin the tour.
"I'd prefer not to have any barriers (at the club) and have people right up by the stage."
"But I guess because of liability problems, most clubs have to have them."
With or without barriers, Bell said he's having fun building the legacy of Weezer.
"A lot of time I jump around and go nuts. Sometimes it's more powerful to just stand by the mike and get eye contact with people."
Opening for Weezer tonight is Archer of Loaf.[sic]
