Overview
Overview
"Where to Start" was first demoed acoustically under the title "Clearer Eyes" by the band in July/August of 2003 at Rod Cervera studio. During the band's first attempt at making Make Believe at Cello Studios in December of 2003, the song was not considered for the album. However, for 2 days late in the Cello session, Rivers Cuomo decided to record solo demos of many songs (including "Clearer Eyes") that had been dismissed in the weeks of pre-production. The likely purpose was to revisit the material to either insure it wasn't needed, or resurrect it for the album. Cuomo recorded another demo, now titled "All I Need to Know Is Where to Start", on February 3, 2004 at the S.I.R. rehearsal studio. Another "S.I.R. pre-production demo" recorded by Cuomo followed in May of 2004 with the shortened title "Where to Start".<br>
The demo "Clearer Eyes" was recorded by Rivers Cuomo in 2003 at the band's rented office space in 2003, and possibly demoed as a band in August of that year at Rod Cervera studio. Cuomo demoed the song himself at Cello Studios in December.

The final studio version of the song was mostly recorded during the band's second attempt at making Make Believe, at Grandmaster Recorders in Los Angeles, CA. The sessions lasted from July 22 to October 22, 2004. It was not among the 12 songs that Cuomo asked to band to only concentrate on, which he felt were the right songs for the album. It was brought back by Pat Wilson, Brian Bell and Scott Shriner while Cuomo was back in Harvard. Wilson, Bell and Shriner used one of Cuomo's demos as guide to record the song from scratch. When Cuomo returned from his semester in February of 2005, he overdubbed new guitar parts and lead vocals to finish the recording. Ultimately the song was excluded from the final track list for unknown reasons and remains unreleased to this day. "Where to Start" is the only song that was brought back by Wilson, Bell and Shriner (the others being "We Are All on Drugs", "Peace" and "The Damage in Your Heart"), while Cuomo was at Harvard, that did not end up on Make Believe. It was listed on Cuomo's spreadsheet of 4 and 5 Star Demos.<br>
Cuomo later rewrote "Clearer Eyes" as "All I Need to Know" and continued demoing it at S.I.R. Rehearsal Studios periodically throughout 2004, initially putting the song on his "A-list" of songs in contention for the band's planned album. The song was not initially in consideration by the time the band entered Grandmaster Recorders to record Make Believe, but the song was reattempted by the remaining band members after Rivers Cuomo left the studio in September to resume classes at Harvard. A finished studio recording of "Where to Start" (sans final mix) was completed as of October but ultimately went unused. The eleven unusued songs from these sessions were later dubbed "the Fallen Soldiers" by Karl Koch.

<poem>
Is there someone I can find
Is there someone I can find
Who will bring me
Who will bring me peace of mind?
Peace of mind
I am alone, always have been

I am alone
Always have been
Never have opened up
Never have opened up
Never shared from my cup
Never shared from my cup
Line 37: Line 43:
I will give her all my love
I will give her all my love
With an open heart
With an open heart
All I need to know is where to start
All I need to know is
Where to start

I am wiser
I am wiser than before
Than before
When I opened every door
When I opened
Looking inside, running away
Every door
Looking inside
Running away
Scared of what I might find
Scared of what I might find
Now I'm crossing the line
Now I'm crossing the line
Line 56: Line 60:
All I need to know is where to start
All I need to know is where to start

Please save me
Please save me, please save me
Please save me
Please save me from myself
Please save me
Please save me, please save me
From myself
Please save me from myself

Please save me
Please save me
Please save me
From myself

I am looking outward
I am looking outward

All I need to know is where to start

And I will give her all my love
And I will give her all my love
With an open heart

All I need to know is where to start
All I need to know is
All I need to know is where to start
