"Death and Destruction" was | "Death and Destruction" was written by Rivers Cuomo in 2001 and initially demoed to Cuomo's handheld digital recorder. It was first recorded as a band during a recording session at Sage and Sound Recording in September of 2001 as an instrumental. This demo was released on weezer.com shortly thereafter. Weezer performed the song live in concert throughout November and December before the band entered Cello Studios to record Maladroit. The first known version of the song to include vocals was recorded on January 6, 2002, and featured an unused third verse which would be replaced with a guitar solo in later versions.
A live performance of the song recorded at a concert in Japan in May of 2002 was included on the live EP The Lion and the Witch, as well as on a "Keep Fishin'" single release in the UK. Weezer continued to play the song throughout 2005, only bringing it back as an instrumental on two occasions in 2012.
