Overview
Rivers Cuomo demoed "Devotion" in the garage at 2226 Amherst Ave. An initial demo, later dubbed "proto-devotion," was followed by another demo the same month. The song later resurfaced as a song in contention for the aborted concept album Songs from the Black Hole. When that concept was scrapped in favor of Pinkerton, "Devotion" was ultimately relegated to being a B-side for various retail CD releases of "El Scorcho."

"Devotion" is in the key of B♭ major for the majority of the song, but modulates Bb minor for the guitar solo. It is one of the slowest songs Weezer recorded in the 90s. The last line of the song's first stanza is direct quote from the 1977 song "All American Man," from the album Alive II by KISS.

Overview
Devotion was initially recorded in July 1994 as a demo in the garage, twice, once as "proto-devotion". It later resurfaced, intended for "Songs from the Black Hole."  When that concept was abandoned in favor of the Puccini-inspired end result, the song was lost in the shuffle and not chosen for inclusion on the album. The band did record it during the album's sessions, however, and issued it as a B-side for retail editions of "El Scorcho."

"Devotion" is one of the slowest songs Weezer recorded in this early 90s period. The lyrics express fondness of a platonic nature giving way to romantic love. The last line of the song's first stanza is direct quote from KISS's 1977 song "All American Man," from Alive II.
