"Homely Girl" was co-written by Rivers Cuomo and Japanese songwriter [https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shusui Shusui] in November 2009. Cuomo released the original, mostly lyricsless demo on the music collaboration website Indaba Music, offering $208 to the person who would produce a better demo (as Cuomo himself had recently suffered cracked ribs and internal bleeding following a bus accident).<ref>"Rivers Cuomo's Session #1" ''Indaba Music''.
