Overview
Overview
The song was demoed several times by the band from 2002 until 2005, evolving several times. "Show Me Who You Are" was recorded during the band's second attempt at making Make Believe, at Grandmaster Recorders in Los Angeles, CA. It was one of twelve songs that Rivers Cuomo asked to band to concentrate on during this period. Cuomo catalogued these demos under the title Unchained Melody.
Weezer demoed "Show Me Who You Are" at Cello Studios around late December of 2003 through early January 2004. Though this version does not exist in fan circulation, solo demos recorded by Rivers Cuomo at S.I.R. Rehearsal Studios in Los Angeles were released in 2020 as part of the digital compilation Alone IX: The Make Believe Years. An initial demo featured lyrics largely the same as those of "Prodigy Lover" (albeit with a new chorus), though the song underwent at least two lyrical revisions before being rewritten as "Stupid Robot"/"Happy Robot"/"I'm a Robot."

April 23, 2004
Mama loved me
<poem>Something is different
In her way
Something has changed
She had nothing
You write me your letters
Much to say
But they're not the same

"I am hungry"
Beautiful lover
"Where's my dinner?"
Playing the keyboard
Drawing that music from me

You could make me happy
If you ever want to
All you have to do is
Show me who you are

Uncomprehending
I'm stupefied
'Cause I wrote the rule book
And you can't abide

Over and over
Checking the airwaves
For just a glimmer of hope

You could make me happy
If you ever want to
All you have to do is
Show me who you are</poem>}}{{Lyric box|

Now I'm grown up
Now I'm grown up wise and strong
Wise and strong
Nothing hurts me very long
Nothing hurts me
When the end comes to release me
Very long

When the end comes
To release me
Will I have someone near?
Will I have someone near?

<poem>Things are so bad recently
When I'm with you, you can't see
I need loving, real connection
I'm a mere human being

You could make me happy
If you ever want to
All you have to do is
Show me who you are

Personnel
Is this too much that I ask?
*Rivers Cuomo – guitar, lead vocals
Is it just an onerous task?
*Patrick Wilson – percussion
I don't want to be a burden
*Brian Bell – guitar, backing vocals
I want someone who cares
*Scott Shriner – bass guitar

*Rick Rubin - producer
You could make me happy
If you ever want to
All you have to do is
Show me who you are

I'm sorry if I'm breaking down
I just can't take the pain of rejection
If you're getting sick in the gut
Then just leave me here in my depression

You could make me happy
If you ever want to
All you have to do is
Show me who you are

You could make me happy
You could make me happy
All you have to do is
Show me who you are
