Development
"I'm a Robot" was the final iteration—beginning with "Prodigy Lover" in 2002 and continuing with "Show Me Who You Are"—in the lineage of songs derived from entry #368 in Rivers Cuomo Catalog O' Riffs. Cuomo is first known to have demoed "I'm a Robot" under the titles "Stupid Robot" and "Happy Robot" in early June 2004, before demoing "I'm a Robot" in late June.
"I'm a Robot" came to exist in its final form in July of 2004, with July 31 being the first date in the recording history to list the song as "I'm a Robot". The song evolved over time from the 2002 track "Prodigy Lover" (thus sharing a number in the Catalog of Riffs), with "I'm a Robot" seemingly only retaining the chord progression of the verse of "Prodigy Lover".

From "Prodigy Lover", the song evolved multiple times as demo recordings by Rivers, first as a song called "Kings of Money", then an untitled revision, then "Show Me Who You Are", then "Happy Robot", before finally becoming "I'm a Robot". Aside from "Kings of Money" and the untitled revision, these titles are currently in circulation among fans.
Weezer recorded "I'm a Robot" at Grandmaster Recorders in Los Angeles beginning in July of 2004. By early October, the song had been completed (sans final mix), but was one of eleven completed songs that did not appear on Make Believe (later dubbed the "fallen soldiers" by Karl Koch). In 2010, a completed mix of "I'm a Robot" was released as part of the compilation album Death to False Metal.

Make Believe contender, Death to False Metal
"I'm a Robot" was completed during initial sessions for the band's Make Believe album. The song was one of twelve specific songs initially recorded by the band after Rivers had done much writing and revising. However, after much reconsideration from the band in late 2004 and early 2005, several of these completed songs were cut, including "I'm a Robot", becoming one of what is known as the "fallen soldiers" of the album.

In 2010, when assembling the Death to False Metal album, the completed 2004 version of "I'm a Robot" was reconsidered and included on the album.

Cuomo's solo demos of the song were released in 2020 as part of the digital demo compilation Alone IX: The Make Believe Years.
