Overview
The liner notes for Everything Will Be Alright in the End groups songs by one of three themes. "Lonely Girl" is grouped under the category "Belladonna" (songs about Cuomo's relationships with women).
"Lonely Girl" is a reworking of a song written by Rivers Cuomo in 2000, titled "Homely." It is not known how significantly different "Lonely Girl" is from "Homely." Following the release of "Lonely Girl" in 2014, fans speculated that the song originated during the Green Album-era based on its song structure. It's possible that Ric Ocasek (who previously produced The Green Album) suggested revisiting "Homely." The provenance of "Lonely Girl" was confirmed in 2020 when a demo titled "Follow" was released as part of Cuomo's digital demo compilation Alone VIII: The Maladroit Years in 2020, wherein an extremely brief snippet of the end of "Homely" can be heard.

Fans often speculated that "Lonely Girl" originated during the Green Album sessions (wherein Weezer last worked with producer Ric Ocasek), due to sharing a similar structure to songs from that period. A song titled "Homely" (not to be confused with "Homely Girl") appears in the Catalog O' Riffs as #231, dated October 27, 2000. This was confirmed to be the case when a snippet of "Homely" was included at the end of the demo "Follow" which was released as part of Alone VIII: The Maladroit Years.

Shortly after the released of the album, an instrumental-only version was leaked online. In December 2017, an early version of the song was leaked, along with the rest of the album.

My lonely girl
My lonely girl, my lonely girl
My lonely girl
My lonely girl, my lonely girl
My lonely girl
My lonely girl

So baby come on
So baby, c'mon
I know how to dance
I know how to dance
And I am the only one who ever takes a chance
And I am the only one
Who ever takes a chance
Give it a try
Give it a try
You're not gonna die
You're not gonna die
Unless you refuse to live and hide away tonight
Unless you refuse to live
And hide away tonight

I'm lonely
I'm lonely, so homely
So homely
Can't you relate?
Can't you relate?

So open your arms
So open your arms
And let me come in
And let me come in
I'd never hurt you girl 'cause that would be a sin
I'd never hurt you, girl
'Cause that would be a sin

I'm lonely
I'm lonely, so homely
So homely
Can't you relate?
Can't you relate?

I'm blurry
I'm blurry, unworthy
Unworthy
Can't you relate?
Can't you relate?

I know you're scared
I know you're scared
I know you're sad
I know you're sad
I'm here to help you realize it's not so bad
I'm here to help you

Realize it's not so bad
So open your arms
So open your arms
And let me come in
And let me come in
I'd never hurt you girl 'cause that would be a sin
I'd never hurt you, girl
'Cause that would be a sin

My lonely girl
My lonely girl, my lonely girl
My lonely girl, my lonely girl
