"Susanne" was written by [[Rivers Cuomo]] and recorded to 8-track in January of [[1994]],<ref name="rechist5" /> as a tribute to Susanne Filkins, an A&R production manager at [[Geffen Records]]. According to [[Karl Koch]], during the period between the recording of ''[[Weezer (The Blue Album)|The Blue Album]]'' in October [[1993]] and its release the following May, Filkins "became a big Weezer supporter, doing her best to keep the guys optimistic about their future with Geffen."<ref name="bluelinernotes">[[''[[Weezer (The Blue Album) Deluxe Edition liner notes|''Weezer (The Blue Album)'' Deluxe Edition liner notes]]</ref> As reflected in the song's lyrics, Filkins reportedly did give Cuomo a spare winter coat and bake him brownies to cheer him up. Before Filkins was made aware of the song's existence, the members of Weezer surprised her with a performance in her office (a capella, with [[Patrick Wilson]] on acoustic guitar).<ref name="bluelinernotes" /> Filkins was reportedly moved to tears.<ref name="rechist5" />

The studio rendition of "Susanne" was recorded in summer of [[1994]] at Ocean Way Studios,<ref name="bluelinernotes" /> alongside B-sides "[[Mykel and Carli]]" and "[[My Evaline]]," and engineered by [[Paul du Gré]]. Cuomo's original lyric, "even Kurt Cobain and Axl Rose," was changed to "even [[Wikipedia:Izzy Stradlin|Izzy]], [[Wikipedia:Slash (musician)|Slash]], and [[Wikipedia:Axl Rose|Axl Rose]]" following the death of [[Nirvana]] frontman Kurt Cobain in April of that year.It appeared on CD and vinyl single releases of "[[Undone - The Sweater Song]]" in Europe. In [[1995]], the band was asked to permit the song's inclusion on [[Mallrats: Music from the Motion Picture|the soundtrack]] of the [[Wikipedia:Kevin Smith|Kevin Smith]] film ''[[Wikipedia:Mallrats|Mallrats]]''. At Electric Lady Studios, during Weezer's first recording sessions for what would eventually become ''[[Pinkerton]]'', a new mix of the song was produced with [[Chris Shaw]]. This version has since become the definitive mix, appearing on the rarities compilation ''[[Dusty Gems & Raw Nuggets]]'' included with the Deluxe Edition of ''Blue'', as well as on digital streaming platforms.
