Archived by ''Wayback Machine''</ref> In the song, Cuomo laments his frequent, casual, sexual encounters. In his original demo, Cuomo played a drum fill two beats too long, requiring him to physically cut the cassette tape and tape it back together.<ref name="rcbtos" /> This demo was first shared with fans on [[weezer.com]] in June of [[2002]]<ref name="rcbtos" /> and later released on the compilation CD ''[[Alone III: The Pinkerton Years]]'' in [[2011]].

In late 1994, Cuomo began drafting a project he dubbed ''[[Songs from the Black Hole]]'' (''SFTBH''),<ref name="thepinkertondiaries">Cuomo, Rivers. ''[[The Pinkerton Diaries]]''. 2011. Self-published.</ref> a space-themed rock opera/musical intended to follow-up {{PN|Weezer}} [[Weezer (The Blue Album)|debut album]] and inspired by his own apprehension about rock-and-roll stardom. For the project, Cuomo retrofitted the song to be sung from the perspective of the album's protagonist (and Cuomo stand-in), [[Jonas]]. In all known drafts of ''SFTBH'', the song appears after Jonas rebuffs the advances of [[Maria]] (a stand-in for [[Jennifer Chiba]]<ref name="aloneiiln">''[[Alone II: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo]]'' [[Alone II liner notes|liner notes]]</ref>).

Cuomo began writing new, more personal songs while attending [[Harvard]]—eventually abandoning the ''SFTBH'' concept—though "Tired of Sex" remained. For the album version, Cuomo substituted the name "Gwen" with "Lyn," reportedly because Gwen would not let him use her name on the album. "Her parents would have figured it out, seeing as how they knew I was dating her," said Cuomo, "It wouldn't have been good."<ref name="rcbtos" />

A rough, in-studio recording of the song appeared on the second disc of the Deluxe Edition of ''Pinkerton'' in [[2010]], listed as "Tired of Sex (Tracking Rough)".
