Iness was a musical entity spontaneously created in September 1994 by Pat Finn, Karl Koch, and Mike Cannamela. Mike was not always present, so the bulk of the material was Pat and Karl's doing, but Mike's contributions were essential. Pat's brother Brendan also contributed a few times.
Iness was a short-lived musical collaboration between Pat Finn, Karl Koch, and Mike Cannamela. Brendan Finn (Pat Finn's brother) also contributed infrequently. The group emerged from a spontaneous recording session that occurred during downtime between Weezer tours in September 1994. By early 1995, it had dissolved.

Overview
Overview
After his prior band Winkler disbanded around 1994, Pat Finn was searching for a way to continue in music, while moving to New York City and living with his to-be first wife. Mike Cannamela had indicated he was also interested in moving to New York, so the two envisioned forming a band there. But in the meantime, Pat was to be wed in Buffalo on September 4, 1994, an event Karl Koch and their friends Weezer ensured they could attend despite being on tour at the time (a long van drive from Kansas City ensued).
:See Iness/Karlification for a version of this section written primarily by Karl Koch
In September 1994, Pat Finn was looking to develop new music following the dissolution of Winkler. Mike Cannamela, another former Winkler member, expressed interest in forming a new band with Finn. Both musicians were in Buffalo, NY — where Finn had recently wed his first wife — when Karl Koch returned home from Weezer headlining fall 1994 tour. A "spontaneous jam session" between the three friends occurred in Finn's father's basement, marking the formation of their loose collaboration. The name "Iness" came from a string of cut-off text on a cassette tape the group recorded over.

After the tour leg ended on September 25, the band went to Los Angeles (to film the "Buddy Holly" video amongst other things), while Karl was sent home to Buffalo to prepare for the next tour leg and await being picked up by the band in their first bus, to start the tour with Live in Alfred, New York. Pat Finn was in Buffalo at this time, and he and Karl and Mike had a recorded spontaneous jam session in the basement of Pat's dad's house at 271 Depew (where Weezer had recently partaken in Pat's wedding reception dinner). The group had no name at that point, but soon were named "Iness" after a truncated pre-existing name on the re-used cassette tape the session was taped on.
In all, three sessions worth of music were recorded by the group as Iness — joined in some instances by Finn's brother Brendan — at different locations. The last Iness songs were recorded in March 1995, at which point the group's activity ceased. Finn and Cannamela continued recording demos together in Brooklyn, NY over the next three years, developing some material Finn would later use in Organic Mechanic. Koch again collaborated with Finn and his brother Brendan in March 1998 as the Melvin Jones Total Soul Attack Orchestra.

After the final session in March 1995, there was no further Iness activity. Pat Finn and Mike Cannimella did a considerable amount of demos in Brooklyn between 1995 and 1998, leading to songs that Pat would later use in Organic Mechanic. The next collaboration between Pat Finn and Karl would be as the Melvin Jones Total Soul Attack Orchestra in March 1998.
