First picking up a guitar at thirteen, Welsh wasn't serious about playing an instrument until at age seventeen he picked up a bass. In 1988, while still in high school, Welsh formed his first band, [[Left Nut]], which rose to prominence in the Boston music scene. After playing in several Boston bands, he joined [[Rivers Cuomo]] in 1997 to play a couple of solo Boston shows. By 1998, Welsh joined [[Weezer]], replacing [[Matt Sharp]] as bass player.
