"The Cruise" is a reworking of the earlier Rentals song "So Soon", an outtake from the For The Ladies sessions, and released as a B-side on multiple "Friends of P." singles. The song is likely inspired by Matt Sharp's friend Timothy "Speed" Levitch, who had previously performed spoken word poetry with Weezer and was the subject of the 1998 Bennett Miller film The Cruise. Levitch's voice is sampled at the end of the song ("But mostly keep it alive"), from a longer poem excerpt (that can be heard on an earlier demo version of the song).
