Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson originally wrote, and may have even recorded, "Automatic" for his project The Special Goodness.  According to Wilson, the song is about the tremendous love he feels for his family. The song was remixed by the group LA Riots for use in the Playstation 3 video game Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. A clip of this remix was used in promotional videos for the game that first appeared in late March of 2008, making it one of the first Red Album tracks to be heard by fans. This remix featured a much faster beat, causing some fans to be surprised by the pace of the album version when it was first heard months later.

A live session version was broadcast on MTV prior to the album's release.
A new recording of the song, with an accompanying video, was broadcast on MTV Live in early June of 2008. The video was directed by Brennan Stasiewicz and edited by Tim Kafalas.

<blockquote><span style="color:#ff0000">Rivers:</span> Pat Wilson wrote that song.<br><span style="color:#ff0000">Scott:</span> He said it's about his family. His family inspired it. I loved it because it had a big heavy rock guitar riff. Which I'm always a sucker for. So I really dug it and wanted it to be on the record. Pat is an awesome song writer. It's inspired by positivity and his family.<br><span style="color:#ff0000">Rivers:</span> So he played all he guitar on that song. It's really ironic that most of the ripping guitar on this album is played by the drummer. He's just such a great guitar player.<br><span style="color:#ff0000">Pat:</span> I've rewritten that song a couple of times and I stumbled on that riff and the chorus and I realized now I'm gonna have a chorus. This song is interesting it's a big rock tune but its kinda got a vibe to it and the lyrics are just about me wanting to give as much love as I can to my family and so its kinda like family rock and it feels a little corny to say it but that what it is<br><span style="color:#ff0000">Scott:</span> It doesn't sound corny. It's a big rocking song and I really excited about it being on the record.<br><span style="color:#ff0000">Pat:</span> The heaviness of love meets the heaviness of rock. It's love rock. But somehow Love Rock is the opposite of Rock of Love.</blockquote>
