Overview
Troublemaker is notably repetitive, with a guitar riff and drum beat that play unchanged throughout almost the entire song. It was added to the track list of The Red Album along with "Pork and Beans" after Geffen said that it was lacking potential hit singles.
Troublemaker was written originally in 2006.  When the label suggested to Weezer to include more commercial material to speed up the album, the band went back to work on the "Troublemaker" demo.  Despite this, the song is listed as the second most recent entry on Rivers' latest songwriting chart.  Rivers' inspiration for the line "Keep it on the up" came from his friend and former band mate Kevin Ridel of Avant Garde and AM Radio.  Ridel has stated "Rivers sure has made my catch phrase popular!" Troublemaker is notably repetitive, with a guitar riff and drum beat that play unchanged throughout almost the entire song.

The song has seen release as a digital single, as well as a one-track promo.  A physical retail single was scheduled to be released in the UK in late September 2008, but it never surfaced. This has frustrated certain members of the fan community, who enjoy collecting the retail singles, which usually include exclusive B-sides - a continuation of circumstances for such ill-fated singles as "Dope Nose" or "Perfect Situation". Later it was suggested that, while plans for a retail single for "Troublemaker" have been abandoned altogether, all effort is being put towards the ramp-up of the next single, "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived".

Later, another promo-only release for "Troublemaker" had surfaced, an EP of seven club/dance DJ remixes of the song called Troublemaker Remixes.  These mixes are typical, mainly electronic, club-style remixes featuring little more than the vocal tracks from the original, although a few utilize other aspects such as the main guitar riff and the wuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh guitar/vocal unison. One track even samples "Dope Nose".

I'm really focused when I'm writing it or even singing it, but talking about it I almost can't remember what the song is about. Troublemaker is a song I had written in 2006 and I was stuck on it. I set it aside and forgot about it. We listened back to old demos and immediately everyone was like, yes that's the song.</blockquote>

Writing Process
Troublemaker was written originally in 2006.  When the label suggested to Weezer to include more commercial material to speed up the album, the band went back to work on the "Troublemaker" demo.  Despite this, the song is listed as the second most recent entry on Rivers' latest songwriting chart.  Rivers' inspiration for the line "Keep it on the up" came from his friend and former band mate Kevin Ridel of Avant Garde and AM Radio.  Ridel has stated "Rivers sure has made my catch phrase popular!"
Reception
Troublemaker has received generally poor feedback from more devout Weezer fans. The simplicity of the repetitive drum beat and guitar riff are criticized heavily by fans, as well as the lyrics of the first verse and chorus. However, some fans hold the the lyrics after the first verse in higher regard, and also praise the bridge of the song. The wuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh guitar/vocal unison section of the song has similarly split fans, as some appreciate it as fun and exciting and others view it as immature. In the mainstream market, Troublemaker was somewhat of a commercial flop. It came up very short of garnering as much attention as Pork and Beans, Weezer's previous single.

Music video
The music video for Troublemaker, released on October 6, 2008 and consisted of Weezer and a selected group of fans attempting to break various world records. It was filmed in front of the Great Western Forum in the Los Angeles suburb of Inglewood, California.  The video includes footage of Weezer fans playing dodgeball, riding on an oversized skateboard, playing air guitar, and filling a large Weezer logo with nachos, cheese, and jalapenos.  Rivers Cuomo was also shown pulling a stationwagon full of Weezer fans with his teeth.  The video alternates between scenes of the hootenanny as well as a live performance by Weezer. It was directed by The Malloy Brothers.
