Make Believe is Weezer’s fifth studio album, released May 10, 2005. It comes three years after Maladroit and comes with a overall better relationship and atmosphere among the members of the band. Rivers Cuomo’s new medication practices and more personal songwriting and story telling influenced the writing and recording of the album.
Make Believe is Weezer’s fifth studio album, released on May 10, 2005. The album arrived three years after the band's previous album, Maladroit. AllMusic.com's Stephen Thomas Erlewine described the song as a "return to musical, emotional bloodletting", adding "It may be a spiritual cousin to Pinkerton, yet it's far removed from the raw, nervy immediacy of that album." The album was a commercial success, with "Beverly Hills" and "Perfect Situation" ranking as among the band's most popular singles to date. Despite this, the album has received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike .

Having started Vipassana meditation practices at producer Rick Rubin's suggestion, Rivers soon felt the effect of the discipline on his songwriting. One song, "Pardon Me" (Rubin's favorite) was written because meditation asked that he seek forgiveness from all those he harmed.  Another song, "Hold Me", was written on a fast. The songs began to reflect a more personal side to Rivers that was suppressed on Maladroit and virtually absent from The Green Album.
The demo process
Over the course of a year and a half, several rounds of demos sessions saw the band record countless songs.  The actual recording of the fifth album would not commence until December of 2003.  That process also lasted the better part of fifteen months.

After Maladroit was released in 2002, Weezer began work on recording a new set of songs for their next albumThese songs showcased a shift in Rivers' songwriting style, focusing more on storytelling, rather than his own personal experiences.
Songwriting for the band's fifth album began before Maladroit had even been released, with demos being recorded as early as March of 2002. In an AIM chat with Rivers Cuomo on January 8, 2002, Cuomo described the sound of Weezer's fifth album as "a combination of The Green Album and Pinkerton, if that's possible! And some MaladroitBut really it's a new different style." A A number of these songs, including "The Organ Player" and "Running Man", featured a shift to third-person storytelling. These sessions also featured, for the first time, songs primarily written and sung by band members other than Cuomo. Ultimately, none of the songs from these sessions would appear on the final album, some song elements were re-appropriated into new songs that would appear on Make Believe.

After returning from the Enlightenment Tour in September 2002, the band reconvened to record, and sessions carried through to early 2003. Many different songs were recorded, most of them multiple times.
Following the summer of 2002, producer Rick Rubin agreed to work with the band on their next album. From September of 2002 through May of 2003, the band recorded new songs at S.I.R. Studios. Some songs that eventually appeared on Make Believe, including "Perfect Situation" and "Hold Me", were demoed as a band for the first time. After being introduced to Vipassana meditation at Rubin's suggestion, Cuomo soon felt the effect of the discipline on his songwriting. One song, "Pardon Me" (Rubin's favorite) was written after Cuomo attended a meditation course in which the teacher told him to repeat over in his mind "I seek pardon from all those who have harmed me in action, speech or thought" . Another song, "Hold Me", was written while fasting.

Rivers would write several demos, leave them to the band to work with, and then go back to Harvard. During breaks, the band would record and rehearse new songs. Rubin oversaw all of the recordings. The band was able to work with a new found cooperation. The band setup themselves as a democracy and for the first time since the old Amherst days, were getting along well.
Pre-production demos for Make Believe were recorded in November of 2003, with proper album production beginning at Cello Studios in December. The band would ultimately be dissatisfied with these recordings, however. Cuomo began recording new demos in January of 2004. Beginning in July, the band recorded again at Grandmaster Studios. Cuomo returned to Harvard in December, with the rest of the band finishing overdubbing through October. In January, the band reconvened at Rick Rubin's studio to assess the album's status. With the band's label requesting a spring release, the band scrambled to complete the album on time, with a lot of the recording and track list decisions being made very late in production, leaving several finished songs on the cutting room floor.
