Weezer Black Album Cover.png"Byzantine" is the ninth track on Weezer's 2019 album "Weezer (The Black Album).".
Poop-Alley-Tapes-cover.jpg"California" is a demo by the Rentals, released on the compilations Excellent Stocking Stuffer and The Poop Alley Tapes. It was later reworked into the song "Barcelona," which was released on 1999's Seven More Minutes.

Laura Jane Grace of Against Me has a co-writing credit for "Byzantine," having sent Rivers Cuomo lyrics ideas via text message. Said Cuomo, "She did most of the lyrics, and she sent them to me as text messages, and I turned it into a song." In an interview with Billboard, Cuomo also explained that song's "bridge is from a pre-Weezer band that (drummer Patrick Wilson) and I were in in 1991, called Fuzz. I searched for the key and the tempo and the basic vibe I was looking for, and it popped up. All of my little bits and pieces of music will find a home eventually."
Matt Sharp wrote "California" and demoed it to 4-track as part of a collection of songs informally dubbed That's Incredible! during the fall of 1993, before the Rentals took shape as a band. The song was later properly demoed at Poop Alley Studios in the spring of 1995. This demo did not appear on the Rentals debut album, but appeared on the compilation The Poop Alley Tapes, released later that year. The song also appeared on the 2001 Rentals fan club-exclusive compilation Excellent Stocking Stuffer. The song was later reworked, with entirely new lyrics, into "Barcelona" for the Rentals' sophomore album Seven More Minutes in 1999.

The song was produced by Dave Sitek, and features a wide array of lyrical references, including Neil Young, Tennessee Williams, and shoe designer Stuart Weitzman.
Ozma covered the song for the 2010 Japanese tribute album Lost Out in the Machinery - Songs of the Rentals.
