The Harvard Crimson

:::—Harvard Crimson interview with Rivers Cuomo - April 26, 2006

The song was originally demoed during the DC Demos and BBC Sessions, as well as played live at many shows, in the summer of 2001.

After being properly recorded for Maladroit, Rivers Cuomo felt the recording was lacking in some way. When the band decided to release the song as the album's second single, he took it as a perfect opportunity to re-record the track entirely, embellishing it significantly. This new version, completed in the Spring of 2002, is the so-called 'radio version' featured on the various single releases and music video.

The Franklin Mint version of the song is an all-keyboards instrumental take created by Pat Wilson. A clip of this version was released by Karl Koch at the official site, but the US CD single remains the only place to (legally) acquire the full recording.

The US CD single is, to date, only the second retail Weezer CD single officially released in the United States - the first being the "Hash Pipe" two-track. It was released in selected areas as a marketing experiment by the record company.

The song "Mo' Beats", demoed by Weezer in the summer of 2002, explicitly references "Keep Fishin'" in its lyrics ("I got mo' beats than y'all / "Keep Fishin'" still seems small")

Julia Nunes, a Youtube star, performed a ukulele cover version of this song.

The music video for the song, which features the band as guests on the legendary Muppet Show, was directed by Marcos Siega, who is responsible for several of the band's videos. The production was the feature of an episode of MTV's Making The Video series. As a result of the video, many promotional and retail items featuring both Weezer and the Muppets were created, such as the CD single cover(s) and T-shirts.
