"Mother Night" was one of the first Relationship songs heard by fans, originally released by Bell in demo form on the band's MySpace page. Like many of the songs the band would eventually release on their debut, the song underwent several re-imaginings before being released. The first features an acoustic drum recording, vocal percussion effects, and a synth string arrangement. Its chorus also includes a call-and-response backing vocal which would eventually be dropped. The second arrangement is quite different, as it is piano-driven and much more stripped down.
The song was written by Yo Gabba Gabba! composer Adam Deibert, a former member of The Aquabats and Bikeride. Awesome Volume 2]] on August 31. On September 14, the song was released again as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of Hurley.
