Weezer The Red Album.jpg"Heart Songs" is the fourth track off of The Red Album.
Weezer Hash Pipe cover.jpg"I Do" is the eleventh track from the UK and Japan editions of The Green Album and a b-side to Hash Pipe.

The song was written as an ode to all the artists and records that have influenced Rivers Cuomo over his life, from Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" when Cuomo was 5 years old, to Nirvana's Nevermind in 1991. The bridge of the song briefly describes the formation of Weezer. Cuomo stated that "Heart Songs" was written in March of 2006 and demo'ed in August of 2006. On his honeymoon in Japan that year, he had a sudden burst of inspiration. At 1 p.m. everyday he would get on his "crazy Japanese bike" and ride for about ten minutes down to the local mega-mall. On the third floor were studios that can be rented for five dollars an hour, with drums and a soundboard. Cuomo explained that he would record his new songs (which included "Heart Songs" and "My Day is Coming"), and when finished, exit "into the midst of a Japanese mega-mall".
Along with "Always," the song is an unusual Green-era track by Weezer in that it does not feature the full band on the recording. The song was written relatively late, while Green was already in production, but did not appear on the final album.  It was released as a b-side and as a bonus track on some international editions of Green, and was performed live at every show during the Yahoo! Outloud Tour, as the set's opening number.

To date, Weezer has not performed "Heart Songs" live.
The song is sometimes derided for its similarity to the 1989 Billy Joel song "Leningrad". Rivers Cuomo called Billy Joel one of his "all time favs" when the comparison was pointed out on the weezer.com forums in 2002 .
