"Booby Trap" was written by [[Rivers Cuomo]] in March of [[2002]]. The song was worked on throughout the Spring during the [[Album 5 Demos|sessions for the band's planned fifth album]]. [[Karl Koch]] first mentioned the song on [[Karl's Corner - 04/06/2002|a Karl's Corner update]] on [[April 6]]. The song is known to have been recorded at least three times that month. The song is known to have been worked on further on [[June 23]] and again on [[July 2]]. The version from July 2 was released for free to fans online. A demo of the song appeared on the digital compilation ''[[Alone VIII: The Maladroit Years]]'' in November of [[2002]].
