Songs from the Black Hole morphed into Pinkerton, which maintained an emphasis on personal, dramatic narrative and symphonic development, along the lines of Puccini. After that album came out, I started looking for a new, more minimalistic, less personal style.

I was amazed that this song seemed to be just as powerful and emotional as my personal songs, even though it was all fantasy, an imagined experience that never happened.

At the time of writing "Lover in the Snow", Cuomo was interested in pursuing a potential side-project tentatively dubbed "Lovely". Described by Cuomo as a "reaction to the reaction to Pinkerton", the music of Lovely would utilize more minimalist song structures and chord progressions, in contrast to the use of numerous chords and key changes in songs such as the Pinkerton track "Falling for You". "Lover in the Snow" was first leaked onto the internet by Cuomo in 2002. The song was hosted on his website, riverscuomo.com, for a period of time. In 2007, the song was officially released (in an edited form), on the compilation Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo. This edit shortens the original demo to reduce some of the repetitive segments.
On March 19, 2008, a music video for "Lover in the Snow" was released via Rivers' MySpace page. The video features a foreword in which Cuomo explains his history with the sport of soccer, and includes footage of himself training for and participating in Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra Celebrity Soccer Challenge in January 2008.

The song was performed by Cuomo with fans at Fingerprints record store in Long Beach, California on November 25, 2008. This performance was featured on the DVD release of Not Alone: Rivers Cuomo & Friends Live at Fingerprints in 2009.
