The following is an excerpt from the MTV.com article "Are Weezer Calling It Quits?" from September 13, 2005, by James Montgomery.
Maladroit is the fourth studio album by Weezer, released on May 14, 2002. The album is known for its "heavy metal" sound, and for the Weezer fanbase's involvement with the recording process.

Immediately following the release of The Green Album, Weezer fired their management, Atlas/Third Rail Management, and longtime manager Pat Magnarella (Magnarella later sued , leading to a protracted legal battle). According to Karl Koch, the firing was a "statement of intent" and Rivers Cuomo felt that the band didn't need management, and could simply fund their next album with their own money and pay themselves back when the album sold. Within mere weeks of the release of Green, the band began recording wholly new songs.
They've been a band for more than 13 years, releasing five albums and winning over an army of overly devoted fans in the process. But all that could soon be a distant memory, because it looks like Weezer might never make another album again.

Throughout the process of writing and recording Maladroit, Cuomo began encouraging webmaster Karl Koch to upload in-progress demos to weezer.com, in order to get feedback and to let the fans decide what direction the album would take. Koch also uploaded soundboard recordings from the Midget Tour. By the time Maladroit was completed, the band had uploaded over 150 in-progress MP3s in various states of completion from the Cello sessions alone, in addition to numerous demos from the preceding studio sessions, all without Geffen's awareness or permission.
Last week, MTV News spoke to the band before the launch of its co-headlining tour with the Foo Fighters (see "Weezer, Foos Bring Arena-Rock Spectacle To Foozer (WeeFighters?) Tour Kickoff"), and the guys were more than candid about a whole host of subjects, including the fact that Make Believe could very well be their final LP.

The title "Maladroit" was suggested by a fan by the username of "lethe". Cuomo also admitted in an interview with Guitar World, "I never would have thought to put the song "Slob" on the record if the fans did not request it." Recording of Maladroit concluded in February, with additional bonus track recording sessions in April. By February of 2002, the band had already begun recording demos for their next album, well in advance of Maladroits May release.
"We have no idea if we're going to be a band next year. That's the fun of being in Weezer," guitarist Brian Bell laughed. "That's why we put out albums every three years, and we have these dark periods where we don't know if we're even going to be a band anymore. But I always have this gut feeling that everything will take care of itself, one way or the other, and it always does."
