[[Rivers Cuomo]] is first known to have demoed the song, under the title "I'll Love You Every Day", to his phone's recording app on [[March 27]], [[2015]]. This recording, featuring Cuomo singing over acoustic guitar, was released on [[November 23]], [[2020]], as part of the compilation ''[[Alone XII: The White Year]]''. Full demos were later released on [[December 13]], 2020.
"The Rat Race" was written by [[Brian Bell]], who also provides lead vocals. The song was demoed on [[August 3]], [[2003]] at [[Rod Cervera]]'s studio. The song went unheard by fans until it was released on [[February 3]], [[2010]] as part of a digital compilation album released by the [http://www.targetcancerfoundation.org/ TargetCancer Foundation] titled ''[[The Right Track: Tunes to Target Cancer]]''. The track was made available as an MP3 for 99 cents, or as a FLAC file for $1.99.


The song was first heard by fans when it was performed live by Weezer, as an instrumental, on [[October 18]], [[2017]] at the [[Weezer concert: 10/18/2017 - Brussels, Belgium|Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Belgium]], wherein it appeared on the setlist under the title "I'll Love You Every Day". The song was listed at subsequent concerts under the title "A Ballad for the Fallen Soldier", and was performed for the remainder of the [[Feels Like Summer Tour]] in Europe in October of 2017. The song was performed one additional time the following December in Portland, Oregon. It followed the song "[[Happy Hour]]" at all concerts in which it was played.
