Overview
Overview
"Starlight" was one of the fourteen Green sessions tracks that was leaked prior to the album's release, and was a contender to make the album's final cut. Like all the other songs from the early MP3 leak, "Starlight" appeared in unmastered and unedited form with a total length of 3:28. The officially released B-Side version on various Hash Pipe singles was edited down to 3:20, omitting the "Whoa, that's not enough" section after the final chorus.
"Starlight" was written by Rivers Cuomo and first known to have been demoed by Weezer at Cuomo's home studio on November 11, 2000. "Starlight" may have formed the basis for the Green Album track "Knock-down Drag-out," as the entry in the Catalog O' Riffs for the latter lists the alternate title "Slow Starlight". "Starlight" continued to be rehearsed by Weezer through December and was recorded in the studio during the Green Album sessions in January of 2001.

In July 2011, after over 10 years, an Argentinian promo CD from Universal Music (Argentina) including the early edit of the song, fully mastered, was found on eBay by a Weezer fan and shared on Allthingsweezer.com. At the time, it was thought to be the only known official and physical release of any of the early edits of the Green Album songs. However, this early edit can also be found on a German 5-track Green Album promo sampler by Motor Music.
The song was one of the fourteen Green session tracks leaked prior to the album's release. Like all the other songs from the early MP3 leak, "Starlight" appeared in unmastered and unedited form with a total length of 3:28. The official mix of the song, released as a b-side on various "Hash Pipe" and "Island in the Sun" singles, was edited down to 3:20, omitting the "Whoa, that's not enough" section after the final chorus. The longer mix of the song, fully mastered, appeared on a 5-track CD sampler in Germany released by Motor Music GMBH, as well as an Argentinian promotional CD from Universal Music.
Zed cover
"Starlight" was covered by Zed in 2002 and released as the first track of the soundtrack to the 2002 comedy film The_Hot_Chick#Soundtrack starring Rob_Schneider. It was also released as a CD single in both the United States and New Zealand on Geffen Records and Universal_Music_New_Zealand, respectively. The New Zealand release of the single features two additional tracks ("Watching the World" and "This One") as well as the music video for "Starlight". The cover was later released as track five on Zed's 2003 album This Little Empire.

These promo releases may also indicates that all the songs may have been edited after the mastering process. So odds are that lossless and mastered versions of the early edits indeed exist and were possibly used for other promo releases.
Rivers Cuomo was flattered by the cover, calling Zed's arrangement an improvement.Citation needed

Music video
"Starlight" may have formed the basis for the Green Album track "Knock-down Drag-out". The entry in the Catalog O' Riffs for the latter song lists the alternate title "Slow Starlight".
A music video was recorded featuring the band playing in a high school while characters from the film (including Schneider himself) swap places with members of the band after drinking an "enchanted" drink, vaguely reflecting on the general plot of The Hot Chick.

Zed cover
The song was covered a year later in 2002 by the New Zealand-based band Zed. The cover was featured as the first track of the 2002 Rob_Schneider-fronted comedy film The_Hot_Chick#Soundtrack, and was released as a CD single in both the United States and New Zealand.
