"I Can't Forget the Way" was first demoed by [[Rivers Cuomo]] on [[January 1]], [[1992]], as part of an effort known as [[the 50 Song Project]], in which Cuomo and [[Pat Wilson]] attempted to write fifty songs in the musical style of bands such as the [[Pixies]] and [[Nirvana]]. The song was recorded during [[Weezer's third practice]] session on [[February 16]], [[1992]], and performed live for the first time at Weezer's first show, at the club Raji's in Hollywood, on [[March 19]]. [[Karl Koch]] has described the song as "really rocking" and "awesome". The song appeared on a spreadsheet compiled by Cuomo titled ''[[The 4 and 5 Star Demos of Rivers Cuomo]]'', released online in [[2008]]. Part of the song was later used as the bridge of "[[Byzantine]]" on ''[[Weezer (The Black Album)|The Black Album]]''. The chorus is similar to the chorus of "[[American Gigolo]]" on ''[[Maladroit]]''.

Cuomo's original demo appeared on the digital compilation ''[[Alone V: Before Weezer]]'', released on [[November 22]], [[2020]].
