In an October [[2017]] interview for Upset magazine, Rivers Cuomo explained that the song is about someone he worked with, specifically “having mixed feelings about them as a collaborator, but ultimately realising we’re much better than anything I can do on my own. Owning up to the mistakes I made in that relationship and reaffirming the value I see in that relationship." In an interview for NPR the same month, Rivers explained that "La Mancha Screwjob" was originally written for 2014's ''[[Everything Will Be Alright in the End]]'', but that it didn't fit the theme of the album. He added that the current version was largely unchanged from the one in contention for that album aside from having a newly written bridge and a very different production style. Rivers also noted that the vocal screeches which open and close the track are his voice manipulated in Pro Tools by Butch Walker.
