The themes for Spring were first mentioned on an iNews interview<ref>"Weezer: ‘Our fans don’t seem to age out. Original plans for Spring, and the SZNZ projects overall, included a backing band called The Wrecking Crew<ref>"Rivers Cuomo mentions Wrecking Crew" https://www.weezerpedia.com/wiki/File:Wrecking_crew_mention.png</ref> and arragements by Rob Mathes<ref>"Rivers Cuomo mentions Rob Mathes" https://www.weezerpedia.com/wiki/File:Rob_mathes_sznz.png</ref>, who previously worked with the band on [[OK Human]] but on [[August 18]], Cuomo told Riverschatters that The Wrecking Crew (and possibly Mathes) were out of the project <ref>"Rivers Cuomo on Riverschat: Wrecking Crew is out" https://www.weezerpedia.com/wiki/File:Wrecking_crew_out.png</ref> and confirmed that recording sessions for Spring were starting in October.

Spring was now described as "Optimistic sorrow, [[Island in the Sun]] MEETS [[OK Human]]" with "Pagan/Wiccan" spiritual vibes. It also implied that they would use a wide range of instruments, including "Acoustics, 12-string guitar, mandolin, recorder, Iron Age percussion and a Glockenspiel." On [[February 27]], Cuomo uploaded a video to his TikTok where a few seconds of the lead single [[A Little Bit of Love]] could be heard and encouraged people on his Discord to create videos with the song in mind.
