The first Weezer album on which [[Rivers Cuomo]] was the lead singer. The first of four Weezer albums that were made available to digital download before being released on a physical format. It was available as a standalone download or as part of a bundle along with all of Weezer's other studio albums. The first in a new series of digitally delivered music that came with Weezer's own custom USB-powered digital media player, the Blue Rock Digital Audio Player. The player's USB slot contained a custom cartridge of the album, designed to work with a pre-recorded CD.

 

The Red Album, as it is colloquially known, was the first Weezer album to feature the redheaded band leader Rivers Cuomo. It was also Weezer's last album to feature the [[Weezer_(album)|"Weezer"]] logo with the band's initials, which they would continue to use until the release of Weezer's [[2009|next]] album, [[Black Album (Weezer album)|The Black Album]] in 2010.

 

The red album became Weezer's third consecutive album to debut at [[#1|#1]] on [[Billboard]]'s Top 200 [[Album charts]]. The album also reached a new high on the Top Internet Albums chart where it peaked at [[#3]] out of the [[#1|#1]] albums with sales of more than 12,000 copies. The Red Album debuted at [[#1|#1]] on the Billboard 200, Weezer's fifth album in six years to reach the top spot of that chart.

 

It also became the [[Rediculous]] [[self-titled]] [[self-titled|Weezer]]''s most successful album yet, selling 1.058 million [[CD]] copies and 1.125 million [[iPods|iPods]] (including bundles and singles). The album topped [[Billboard]]'s Top Internet Albums chart and remained on the chart for [[12 weeks]], selling a total of [[1,000,000|1,000,000]|1,000,000]] copies.

 

After the release of The Red Album, the band continued its recording process on [[Black Album (Weezer album)|The Black Album]], which would eventually come to [[#1|#1]] on [[Billboard]]'s Top 200 [[Album charts]].

 

The Red Album won Weezer's [[Vicar_A_Bone_Sawyer]] as the Album of the Year. In the process, Weezer achieved a rare feat of having all four of its studio albums chart at the same time.

 

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Rivers Cuomo said that "We knew we were going to have to find an [album] cover," and chose "a picture of a big rock with a little flag at the bottom... that said 'The Red Album.' We were talking about having a title but we didn't have one at the time. We didn't have a label to tell us that [the title] was stupid, so we just took it." Cuomo then said that he was "just being creative" and said that it could've been "The Red White and Blue Album," "The Red Man," "Redhead," "The Red Album," or "The Red Record."

 

 

 

Weezer has never won a Grammy Award, but The Red Album received a Grammy for [[Album_of_the_Year#2008|Album of the Year]]. Weezer was nominated in the category of [[Record_of_the_Year]] for the [[2008|2008]] Grammy Awards.

 

The album was rated the [[best album]] of 2008 by Rolling Stone, [[Billboard]] and [[NME]]. The Album of the Year award was accepted by Rivers Cuomo, who expressed gratitude for the award. In accepting the award, Weezer played "The Red Album" and "Buddy Holly" at the awards ceremony.

 

Many critics cited the inclusion of "The Red Album" as one of the reasons for its positive reception. The song received [[#1|#1]] on the [[Billboard]] Hot 100 Singles, [[Billboard Hot 100 Singles|Billboard]] Hot Digital Songs, and [[Billboard Hot 100 Singles|Billboard]] Hot Modern Rock Tracks charts. The song also appeared at [[#2|#2]] on the [[Billboard|Billboard]] Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, [[Billboard|Billboard]] Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, and [[Billboard|Billboard]] Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks. "The Red Album" ranked [[#2|#2]] on the [[Billboard|Billboard]] Hot 100 Alternative Songs, and [[#6|#6]] on the [[Billboard|Billboard]] Hot Digital Songs. In its third week on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, the song dropped to [[#6|#6]] and was last in the chart for the week of April 5. The single reached a peak of [[#4|#4]] on the [[Billboard|Billboard]] Hot 100 Pop Songs chart, and the band's first single to top this chart.

 

According to music video blog [[MusicRadar]] at the time, Rivers Cuomo stated that "The Red Album" was a "very personal track and very real" and that "the song is very much about finding yourself."

 

When the album was released, the first single "Buddy Holly" was used as the theme song for the [[American]] Broadcasting Company's [[Big Brother]], though the lyrics were altered to replace the phrase "big brother" with the phrase "big red". The American Broadcasting Company's website had posted a lyric to "Buddy Holly" on its web page on May 18, 2008 at the time of the song's release. The lyrics were altered by a web administrator in an attempt to prevent the American Broadcasting Company's legal department from contacting Weezer. The lyrics and the music video were removed from the site on May 25, 2008, after a phone call was made to the American Broadcasting Company, which informed the site administrator that Weezer would be taking legal action.

The song "What's My Age Again" is a duet between Rivers Cuomo and Pink, which was recorded in 2006.
