Overview
Overview
It was recorded during the band's second attempt at making Make Believe, at Grandmaster Recorders in Los Angeles, CA. It was one of twelve songs that Rivers Cuomo asked to band to only concentrate on, as well as part of the early Unchained Melody working album.
"Over the Mountain" is a reworking of Cuomo's previous demo, "Et Tu Brute," with new verse lyrics. It was demoed several times by Cuomo in 2004 at S.I.R. Rehearsal Studios in Los Angeles before evolving into the song "They Are Stupid." The song was first heard by fans in November of 2020, when it was among hundreds of demos leaked through the demo storefront on riverscuomo.com. The demos were made available for purchase later that month as part of the demo compilation Alone IX: The Make Believe Years.

<poem>
This is quite absurd
You may break my back
And you may step on me
Push me in a crack
But I will always be
I will never die
And I will haunt your dreams
You will wonder why
You still can hear my scream
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun

I will wait for you
And I will always love
Whatever you do
You are my god above
Someday you will see
And you will come to me
I will know your kiss
And we'll live happily

I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun

See me, I have grown up
I am so tall
I am so strong
How did I learn?
How did I die?

I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun

But still it must be true

All these songs we've heard
Are sung from me to you

But still I want to rhyme
But still I want to rhyme
