Biography

In 1997, following the release of Weezer's 1996 album, Pinkerton, Rivers Cuomo began writing droning, minimalist songs as a reaction to Pinkerton's complex chord structures. Mikey Welsh suggested drummer Zeph Courtney for Cuomo's new potential side-project (dubbed "Lovely"). Cuomo first saw Courtney perform as part of a Kyuss cover band, and the three rehearsed as "Lovely" in Cuomo's basement. Courtney played drums at (at least) two of Cuomo's solo concerts in October of 1997, alongside Welsh and Kevin Stevenson.

Courtney played drums on the Juliana Hatfield album Juliana's Pony: Total System Failure, released in 2000.
