"California Snow" is a song by Weezer. Originally released on September 20, 2018 as a single to accompany the film Spell. The song appears over the film's credits and in its trailer. The song appeared again in 2019 as the final track of Weezer (The Black Album).

Overview

Rivers Cuomo confirmed to members of the website Riverchat in 2021 that the lyric "Nobody cold as this" was lifted from the Kanye West song "Monster."[1] The song received a music video in 2019. The initial verse and chorus of the song was performed during concerts on the Hella Mega Tour as a lead-in to "Say It Ain't So." Performances of the song included the line "COVID can suck my dick" in place of "Nobody cold as this."

Promotion

Cuomo first alluded to the song's existence with a tweet on March 11, 2017, in which he simply stated "California Snow verse was cool" [2]. On the 24th of that month he tweeted again: "Got a producer for California Snow"[3]. At some point around September of 2018, a billboard appeared on Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles featuring Cuomo as the character Rivers Haskell from what would eventually be revealed to be the film Spell, which premiered later that month. The billboard (and accompanying fliers) list the character of Haskell as "qualified to prescribe CALIFORNIA SNOW":

Reception

The song received a middling review from the music review website Stereogum.[4]

Audio/Video

A music video for the song was released on November 11, 2019, more than a year after the song's original release (to coincide with the video on-demand release of Spell on November 19). The video, directed by Spell director Brendan Walter, features Spell star Barak Hardley as well as actor Adam DeVine.

Lyrics

Walk soft with a big stick
When I play guitar it's sick
This is the definition of flow
Nobody cold as this

California snow
Never let me go
'Cuz I'm down
Yes, I'm down if you’re down
California snow
Never let me go

Back in thirty minutes
High as I can get it
Give me everything you got
I can move a mountain
Solve a thorny problem
Lava's gonna flow so hot
Never worry 'bout tomorrow
'Cuz I'm livin' for today
If you see a tear fall
Don’t worry 'bout me, y'all
This is what it’s like on top

California snow
Never let me go
'Cuz I'm down
Yes, I'm down if you’re down
California snow
Never let me go

Never go against the family
All I ever have to do is sing
Never go against the family
When the root is strong, the fruit is sweet
Did you ever get to be a child?
Shake it up until it hurts
Panic attack, stay the hell back
It's me and you against the world

C'mon, Judas, give me a kiss
Can’t take no more of this
Don't nobody look at me
And nail me up by the wrists

California snow
Never let me go
'Cuz I'm down
Yes, I'm down if you’re down
California snow
Never let me go
