"Et Tu Brute" is an unreleased Weezer song originally recorded as a demo for Make Believe. It was later reworked into the songs "Over the Mountain" and, ultimately, "They Are Stupid".

Overview

The song was demoed several times by the band in 2003 and 2004 at the S.I.R. rehearsal studios.

"Et tu, Brute?" is a Latin phrase literally meaning "and you, Brutus?" or "also you, Brutus?", often translated as "You as well, Brutus?", "You too, Brutus?", or "Even you, Brutus?". The quote appears in Act 3 Scene 1 of William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, where it is spoken by the eponymous Roman dictator at the moment of his assassination, to his friend Marcus Junius Brutus, upon recognizing him as one of the assassins.

Lyrics

Et tu Brute
I didn't have enough daggers in my back
Et tu Brute
You wanted to enjoy the thrill of the attack
Et tu Brute
You thought you would devote yourself to someone new
Et tu Brute
How quickly you forgot the love I gave to you

So I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain
Where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain
To the sun

Et tu Brute
I can't express the pain I felt to see your hate
Et tu Brute
I knew the other crooks would come to seal my fate
Et tu Brute
The only wound that runs with blood was made by you
Et tu Brute
I guess there's nothing left for us to say or do

So I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain
Where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain
To the sun

I loved you so tenderly
I just couldn't see that you had bitterness
Waiting there for me
I just couldn't see

So I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain
Where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain
To the sun

I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain
Where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain
To the sun
