"It's Been So Long" is a fan club-exclusive 7"-vinyl single by Weezer, released in 2019.

Background

The earliest known song sketch for "It's Been So Long" was recorded December 2, 2013. This sketch was released in 2020 as part of the demo compilation Alone XI: The EWBAITE Years. The existence of the song became known to fans when the title was seen written in Ric Ocasek's notebook in a video posted to Rivers Cuomo's Instagram account[1] during the making of Everything Will Be Alright in the End in 2014. It is unknown, however, whether or not this note refers to the same song or a different song of the same name, as a seemingly unrelated demo titled "It's Been So Long" was also released in 2020 as part of Alone XI.

In 2019, "It's Been So Long" was revealed to be the Weezer Fan Club single for that year. The single shipped in May, and was leaked online May 10, 2019, the 25th anniversary of the release of The Blue Album. The single does not feature a b-side.

The song begins with the countdown “Gunter glieben glauchen globen”, a German-sounding gibberish phrase invented for the 1983 song “Rock of Ages” by Def Leppard.

Artwork

The album packaging was designed by illustrator Alec Longstreth, who had previously designed merchandise for the band. Karl Koch provided art direction, including photos of the interior of the band's old van, Betsy, which is portrayed on the front cover. The back cover portrays the band surrounding the van, broken down on the side of the road, as it was known to do. Scott Shriner is depicted driving past the band in the Dodge Challenger he drove during that period, foreshadowing his future position in the band.

Early sketches of the art were shared by Longstreth on his blog.[2]

Lyrics

Gunter glieben glauchen globen

We don't wanna end up as grumpy as our parents did
Sticking to a boring routine
Taking out the garbage and scrubbing dirty dishes
Is just not quite as fun as it seems

It's been so long since we cuddled 'til the break of dawn
It's been so long since we put the Smashing Pumpkins on
I can't tell you where this thing went wrong
It's been so long
Let's do it again

We couldn't believe we were really getting married
And going on our dope honeymoon
Everything was perfectly filtered like an Instagram
All our dreams had finally come true

But it's been so long since we put our fins and snorkels on
It's been so long since we played a game of Donkey Kong
I can't tell you where this thing went wrong
It's been so long
Let's do it again

Ooh-hoo
It's been so long
Ooh-hoo
It's been so long

1..2..

We don't wanna end up as grumpy as our parents did
Sticking to a boring routine

It's been so long, so let's dance like it's a senior prom
It's been so long, now we've got another favorite song
I can't tell you where this thing went wrong
It's been so long
Let's do it again
Ooh-hoo
It's been so long
