"J Is for Joy" was conceived by screenwriter Will Aldis for the film The Space Between. Songwriter Rivers Cuomo was instructed to write a song inspired by the song "Julia" by the Beatles.[1] The song is sung in the film by Kelsey Grammer as the character Micky Adams (named Billy Adams in the script). The only Cuomo composition on the soundtrack to be performed "live" within the diegesis of the film, "J Is for Joy" is sung by the character Micky, at the climax of the film, for his daughter, Julia (Julia Goldani Telles), who has grown up believing the song is not about her. The lyrics about the "dying balloon" appear in the film's script and reference a photograph seen earlier in the story.
The song's existence first became known to fans after the title was added to the BMI Repertoire (#31493753) in 2019. A demo sung by Rivers Cuomo is also included on the soundtrack. Other demos were later added to the digital compilation Alone XIII: The Pacific Daydream Years, in 2021.
