Joan Wasser is a violinist and singer/songwriter. In the mid-1990s, she played violin in a Boston-area band called The Dambuilders. Rivers Cuomo had Wasser in mind to play the part of Maria in his space opera Songs from the Black Hole, but never told her about these plans. Cuomo befriended several local Boston bands while attending Harvard University and it is believed that this is how he knew of Wasser.
