It must be hard for Weezer to make an album without sounding like a Weezer cover band. You can hear them struggling on Make Believe to keep fans bouncing along to the power-pop anthems but also keep it interesting for themselves so frontman Rivers Cuomo won't put the whole thing on hiatus again. The mediocre rap of "Beverly Hills" finds them falling into the same geeky "we can't understand our own popularity" role, but they strike decent middle ground elsewhere. The Ben Folds-esque "Perfect Situation," rockin' stomp of "My Best Friend" and '80s-inspired "This Is Such a Pity" are their best shots, with Cuomo penning concise, exposed and even apologetic lyrics. Make Believe proves that (at least half of the time) Weezer doesn't have to play Weezer all the time.
