"Mr. Taxman" (also known as "Helpless") is a song written by Rivers Cuomo in 2000 and later demoed multiple times during the demo sessions for Maladroit. The song was also revisited during sessions for the band's intended fifth album immediately following completion of Maladroit in 2002.

Appearances

Overview

"Mr. Taxman" was written by Rivers Cuomo in 2000. The song was demoed by Weezer at Cuomo's home rehearsal space in late 2000 in contention for the band's planned third album (The Green Album[1]). The song did not make the cut for Green, but was demoed again during studio sessions for Maladroit. Three demos from these sessions were shared with fans on weezer.com. The song was briefly considered yet again for the band's planned fifth album, though did not appear on that album either.

A Maladroit demo of "Mr. Taxman" purportedly received radio play from the station 97.7 WOXY in Oxford, Ohio.[2]

about this table

Lyrics

Everybody love your body
'Cause it's here that you got to stay
Take your chances, find romances
But you still got your bills to pay

When nothing's on my mind
She can't be far behind
Or begging me to stay
Or pushing me to climb
And I feel so helpless every time

Mr. Taxman, can you hear me?
'Cause I know that you got one too
In your jockstrap
Don't you talk back
'Cause she's still got a hold of you

When nothing's on my mind
She can't be far behind
Or begging me to stay
Or pushing me to climb
And I feel so helpless every time
That's what you get for being blind

When nothing's on my mind
She can't be far behind
Or begging me to stay
Or pushing me to climb
And I feel so helpless all the time
That's what you get for being blind

Mr. Taxman, can you hear me?
'Cause I know that you got one too
'Cause I know that you got one too
Yes, I know that you got one too
