Overview

"Over the Mountain" is a reworking of Cuomo's previous demo, "Et Tu Brute," with new verse lyrics. It was demoed several times by Cuomo in 2004 at S.I.R. Rehearsal Studios in Los Angeles[1] before evolving into the song "They Are Stupid." The song was first heard by fans in November of 2020, when it was among hundreds of demos leaked through the demo storefront on riverscuomo.com. The demos were made available for purchase later that month as part of the demo compilation Alone IX: The Make Believe Years.

Lyrics

April 23, 2004

You may break my back
And you may step on me
Push me in a crack
But I will always be
I will never die
And I will haunt your dreams
You will wonder why
You still can hear my scream

I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun

I will wait for you
And I will always love
Whatever you do
You are my god above
Someday you will see
And you will come to me
I will know your kiss
And we'll live happily

I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun

See me, I have grown up
I am so tall
I am so strong
How did I learn?
How did I die?

I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun

May 3, 2004

This is quite absurd
But still it must be true
All these songs we've heard
Are sung from me to you
Poetry is trite
But still I want to rhyme
Stay with me tonight
If you have any time

I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun

City folk will scoff
And so I must agree
If this gets us off
Then we should let it be
Deep within our brains
There is a prisoner
Let's undo his chains
And let our fate occur

I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun

Sad one, show me your smile
Show me your heart
Show me your pain
I can feel too
Show me your heart

I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun

You don't need to fear
I'll never bother you
I just wanna be near
And do what I can do
I will hold my own
And look out for myself
You can do your thing
And I'll be there to help

I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun

Come what ever may
I'll never leave your side
Even if you fall
I'll never run and hide
I will fight for you
Until the bitter end
That is how I am
I hope you understand

I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun

Dear one, give me a chance
Give me some hope
Give me some love
I can be strong
I can be strong

I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain where you run
I will follow over the mountain
Over the mountain to the sun
