March 2002: Westlake Studios - early Album 5 sessions

In between theHyper Extended Midget Tour and the Spring '02 Europe tour, the band recorded new material, with the intention of getting a start on their 5th album before the 4th (Maladroit) was even released! None of these songs or recordings made it to the 5th album, creating yet another set of well recorded demos. Listed below are what songs were worked on that day. Many takes of each song were tried.

This recording was later finished up and became a commercially released b-side, the "Franklin Mint" version of "Keep Fishin'".

May 2002 - Japan World Cup Tour

The band had all shows on this tour recorded. Later, a live E.P. was released in September '02 called The Lion and the Witch, which consisted of performances culled from these recordings.
Shows that the songs were drawn from:

  1. Intro (Fukuoka) / "Dope Nose" (Nagoya)
(the intro includes an instrumental piece known as "Polynesia", that wasn't listed in the track listing due to a 6 song limit on what officially constitutes an "E.P.")

The Enlightenment Tour - 07/02 - 8/02

The Enlightenment Tour was heavily documented. Most shows were recorded by the band's sound engineer, who recorded the show in one of 2 different ways, depending on the situation. The first method involved recording the mix from the mixing board direct to a cd-r in a 'consumer' stand alone cd burner. The other method involved recording multitrack to a DA-88 8 track rig, the masters from which were later mixed down by Rod Cervera. This second method was preferred but not always possible, particularly earlier in the tour.

Also, many of the shows were covered by a video crew for the 'jumbotrons', and their live multicamera video mix was preserved to video tape which usually (but not always) ended up in the bands possesion after the shows. Meanwhile Karl was also shooting digital video, usually with 2 different cameras (one on a tripod, the other hand held), selecting various songs each night to focus on.

Additionally, some shows on this tour were audio bootlegged by fans, sometimes secretly, and sometimes with the cooperation of the band and Karl, working with a co-ordinating fan who acted as an online liason betweeen potential fan 'tapers' and karl, who each night would guide the taper to the soundboard area, where they were allowed to set up their independent recording system (everything from minidiscs to semi-pro setups).

Also, there were some recordings made of soundchecks, where the band would work on new material, at the time intended for Album 5.

the following list is a work in progress, as it is incomplete in the bootleg info department. Your input is welcome, email Karl with additions/corrections.

  • 07/06/02 Salt lake City - show - cd-r 1 track master, later recut into 19 tracks

  1. "The End of the World" (cover version of a Nina Gordon (Veruca Salt) song)

this recording was unofficially released online in mp3 form.

  1. "Worry Rock" (Green Day cover)

this recording would be released on the Green Day Tribute album, which was put out on Skunk Ape records later in 2003.

02/??/03 Rivers home demos

In February 2003, Rivers posted 2 cover song mp3s on his Myspace page, which quickly spread throughout the online community before he took them down.

  1. "Without You"
  2. "Je Changerais d'Avis"

03/06/03 rivers home recording

  1. 426 "Hold Me"

This recording was unofficially released online in mp3 form at this time. Throughout the 2003 recording process, Rivers was doing various (very) lo-fi home recordings, either directly into his computer or into a handheld digital voice recorder, in order to save new song ideas, even as the new album was taking shape. There is no list of these recordings and it it unknown if they were saved or not. This "Hold Me" and a handful of cover songs are just about the only home Rivers demo material from this time that has ever surfaced.

"...Rivers posted on the RCB that Scott played on it, and some other non =w= people, i think he said there were 2 other guitarists, but i could be wrong. -jason skislak"

3/??/03 - rehearsal at SIR (?)

  1. "Hold Me" (partial clip)

There is a (partial) full band electric version of "Hold Me" that was shared with fans by Rivers via a direct-to-fan mp3 sharing, around this time, soon after the acoustic hom demo of "Hold Me" was released (see 3/6/03 above). It does not show up on the known SIR tapes from this period, but there was a lot of confusion and some unfinished/undocumented stuff around this time so it may have slipped away from the cataloguing process.
According to the talk at the time, the personell on this recording is Rivers and Scott plus 2 fill in players. This does match what was going on in the SIR sessions at the time (see 3/21, below).
many thanks to Jason S. for help in clearing up the 'Hold Me' story.
