Overview

Weezer is recording a new song this week for the U.S. soccer team...hopefully to be released before Saturday's game. It's called Reprazent!
Rivers Cuomo, Twitter[1]
In 2006, in exchange for tickets to U.S. soccer matches, Rivers Cuomo was asked by the U.S. Soccer Federation to write a theme song for the team. In the months leading up to the World Cup Finals, however, Cuomo found himself preoccupied with finishing his final semester of college and preparing for his wedding. By the time Cuomo found time to write later that year, his mood had dramatically shifted following the poor performance of the U.S. team, who were eliminated in the first round, leading him to write the melancholy ballad "My Day Is Coming." Years later, however, Cuomo sought to write a newer, more enthusiastic song.[2] On June 7, 2010, Cuomo announced on Twitter[1] that Weezer was recording a new song that week for the U.S. team, ahead of the U.S. team's first match that Saturday (June 12). "Represent" was co-written by Cuomo with Rick Nowels, who Cuomo also collaborated with on the Hurley album track "Hang On." "Represent" was released as a standalone digital single on June 11, 2010.

An alternate version of the song, listed as the "Rocked Out Mix," was included as the fourteenth track on the deluxe version of Weezer's subsequent album, Hurley, on September 10, 2010. This version ends with a short piano/string outro, which would later be demoed as a full song, titled "Semper Fi" (also known as "Higgs Boson").

Lyrics

US Soccer 2010!
Represent

I'm sick and tired of everybody
Trying to tell me what to do
If I'm in need of your advice
Then surely I would come to you
I didn't get in this position
Just by happenstance
I work my bones beyond my limit
Just to have half a chance

It matters how you play the game
It matters that you can take the pain
You don't want to lie, steal,
Or cheat your way to the top
It matters what your people think
You represent your family
But that's just one more reason
To see that it matters
Whether you win or lose

Why don't we see who is the wizard
And play some one-on-one
I think you'll find me sympathetic
To ya' when I've won
It's seems you've got the brawn to beat me
If beef was all it takes
But I got skills to pay the bills
And punish each of your mistakes
You know that

It matters how you play the game
It matters that you can take the pain
You don't want to lie, steal,
Or cheat your way to the top, oh
It matters what your people think
You represent your family
But that's just one more reason
To see that it matters
Whether you win or lose

One hundred years from now
They'll look back on this day
Where are you going to be
And what are they going to say
I see my name in lights
The people call my name
It's all up to you
Will you find your way?

It matters how you play the game
It matters that you can take the pain
You don't want to lie, steal,
Or cheat your way to the top
It matters what your people think
You represent your family
But that's just one more reason
To see that it matters
(Whether you win or lose)

It matters what your mama thinks
You represent your family
But that's just one more reason
To see that it matters
Whether you win or lose
