Overview
"Ruling Me" was written by Rivers Cuomo with Dan Wilson (frontman of the band Semisonic). The two hung out together in Los Angeles around 2006 to write the song:
When Semisonic first started releasing music, one of our first fan letters (at our AOL band account) was from Rivers Cuomo. He had heard our song “Brand New Baby” on the radio in Boston and emailed us to praise it. We were astonished. Rivers’ band Weezer was an icon of smart indie rock that blew up on the pop charts - a pretty decent outline of what I was hoping to accomplish myself. When he signed off “5000 G,” none of us knew what it referred to, so, being nerds, we asked him, and he kindly explained. At this point, we knew we were out of our league.
10 years later back in Minneapolis, I got an unexpected email from Rivers again asking if I wanted to write some songs. I flew to LA a few weeks later. We got together at his place and had a hilarious time. At one point we drove a golf cart through the neighborhood to surprise Rick Rubin. Rick let us in and we all listened to records for a while. I remember I showed them my favorite Mastodon song and Rivers introduced us to Kid Kudi’s “Day ‘n’ Nite.” Then Rivers and I took the golf cart back to his place and wrote “Ruling Me.” The next day he sent me a rocking demo of the song sounding just like Weezer.

"Ruling Me" was never performed live in concert but a "live in the studio" version (recorded September 9, 2010) was aired on Sirius XM's AltNation.
